GERMAN 1st lesson – not only for Candy candybar/hearteyes.gif
In German there are 3 genders: feminine : definite= die, indefinite = eine
Masculine: definite = der, indefinite= ein
neuter : definite = das, indefinite = ein
The biggest problem is that you have to learn the word with the gender. There are very complicated rules that say when to use what gender but they have so many exceptions that it is best to learn the gender right with the world…It isn’t as in English where all people are he or she and other things are it :-(
Don´t give up ladies.
In German we sometimes use vowel mutation/ umlaut : ä,ö,ü
International transcription for pronunciation is:
ä : / ?=here is a problem this site cannot "understand" the symbols..I 'll try to do something with it
ö : /
ü y: /y
all of them can be read short or long
All the nouns start with capital letter!!

Some basic words: (German English)
ich = I
du = you
er = he
sie = she
es = it
wir = we
ihr = you (you speak to friends, small children….)
sie = they
Sie =you – call ( you speak to someone you regard/ respect…)

ja = yes
nein = no
das Deutsch = German (language)
und = and
der Tag = day
die Frau = woman
der Herr = man (male)
null = 0
eins = 1
zwei = 2
drei = 3
vier = 4
fünf = 5
sechs = 6
sieben = 7
acht = 8
neun = 9
zehn = 10

Verbs must be declined…. That isn´t easy so I postpone it for one of the next lessons.
Infinitives of the most important verbs:
sein = be
machen = make (sth.)…not in the meaning make somebody do something
sprechen = speak

Next time I add more rules for pronunciation.
If you have any suggestion send me PM , please

Sorry, it isn't perfect candybar/smile.gif
Ich spreche Deutsch - is right.
das can be left out if you speak generally (but this isn't big mistake).
As I have written you must decline all the verbs in German(!)
It isn't much easy so I' ll explain it complexly tomorrow.
But I appreciate your effort. candybar/hug.gif

So how to decline verbs in German.
There are 3 types of verbs 1) regular ..2)irregular ..3)modeal
most of the words are regular= declination is regular (--> quite easy)
e.g. sagen = to say the root of the word is sag -en
1. ich sage
2. du sagst
3. er sagt
1. wir sagen
2. ihr sagt
3. sie/Sie sagen

You must learn this by heart as you will use it often ...
another regular verbs are:
wohnen = to live (somewhere) (woh-en...woh is the root) e.g. ich wohne in der Tschechische republic = I live in the Czech Republic.
gehen = to go (geh-en...geh is the root)
e.g. du gehst = you do

try to decline verbs:
bitten (bitt-en) = to ask for, studieren (studier-en)= to study, gehen, wohnen,...
The results will be in the next lesson :-)

For Candy: sprechen = to speak, is irregular verb.... so next lesson...

ich wohne in Qatar (I don´t know how to say Qatar in German but I ´ll found it out..)Ok
ich studiere Deutsch (studier is the root and you add e )
ich gehe = I go
ich wohne = I live (somewhere)
ich bitte = I ask for

geh, wohn, bitt are roots of the verb
you allways remove en from the end of the verb and then add e for ich, st for du.......
Nice work Candy- you are making great progress
